Indian Railway - Connecting people of the nation
Indian rail is main medium of international transportation in economy. This is ideal to take things to other place on large scale and to travel long distance. Well established Indian Rail system meets people of nation from distant areas and make possible to do business, site seeing, pilgrimage and education. Indian Railways enhances life status and thus helps making industry and development faster. Indian Rail (IR) is the largest rail network of Asia and the second largest singular managed network. This has been main content of transportation field of India from more than 150 years. This is the largest employer of India and having more than 1.4 million employees. This not only plays an important role in fulfilling basic structural needs of the nation, but also helps adding scattered areas together and enhancement in national unity. During emergency situations this has played an important role of transportation of resque material in emergent areas.
In the year 1853 there was a small start when first train was run between Bombay and Thane with steam engine (this distance was 34 k.m.). Indian Railways has become a large network with 63,327 k.m. long railway line and 6,909 stations. It includes 8153 locomotive, 45,350 passenger service vehicles, 5905 other coaching vehicles and 207719 vagons (31 March 2007 status). Indian Railways is a multi-guage system which includes broad guage 1676 mm, meter guage 1000 mm, narrow guage 762 mm and 610 mm.
Luggage and passengers are two important sections of Indian Railway. Luggage section conains revenue of around 70 per cent whereas remaining part comes from passenger traffic. Enough tries are made to make rail traffic competitive so that more traffic can be attracted.
Indian Rail network is controlled by its 16 zonal offices. These are Northern Railway, New Delhi, Northern Central Railway, Allahabad, Northern Western Rail, Jaipur, Northern Eastern Frontier Rail, Maligaon (Guwahati), Eastern Northern Railway, Gorakhpur, Centrail Rail, Mumbai CST, South Central Rail, Sikandarabad, Eastern Central Rail, Hajipur, South-East Central Rail, Bilaspur, Western Central Rail, Jabalpur, Eastern Rail, Kolkata, Estern Rail, Bhubaneshwar, Southern Rail, Chennai, South Western Rail, Hubli, South-East Rail, Kolkata and Western Rail, Mumbai (Church Gate).
